A journey through the Gospel of Mark 1:21–34
Have you ever had one of those days where you get to the end of it and wonder how you possibly fit everything into the last twelve hours?
Mark 1 gives us one of those days in the life of Jesus, and when you slow down and look at everything that happens, it is incredible. Jesus teaches in a synagogue, He confronts an unclean spirit, He heals a sick woman. Then, after the sun goes down, when you and I would think about getting some needed rest; seemingly the entire town shows up at the front door looking for Him.
But Mark wasn’t simply giving us Jesus’ itinerary… remember, It is in the details where we find the gems! You see, there’s one word that keeps popping up throughout this passage…
AUTHORITY!
Jesus Walks into the Synagogue
Mark tells us: “Then they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and taught.”
— Mark 1:21
There is that word Mark loves, Immediately, Jesus has called Simon, Andrew, James, and John to follow Him, and now they are getting a front row seat to see exactly Who they have decided to follow. Imagine being one of those guys, not long ago, you were throwing fishing nets into the Sea of Galilee… Now you’re following Jesus into a synagogue in Capernaum.
Then Jesus begins teaching.
Teaching in a synagogue wasn’t unusual, synagogues were important places of worship, prayer, Scripture reading, and instruction. Visiting teachers would sometimes be invited to speak.
What happened when Jesus started talking, Mark says: “And they were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.”
— Mark 1:22
They weren’t merely impressed… they were astonished! Something was different about this Man… You see, the scribes would simply read the Torah and cite religious tradition. Their “teaching” often involved appealing to established interpretations and recognized teachers. Sounds exhilarating, doesn’t it?
But Jesus was different! Jesus wasn’t simply telling people what someone else had said about God. Jesus spoke with authority!
Why?
Because Jesus knew exactly what He was talking about. Jesus believed what He was saying, and most importantly…He possessed the authority with which He spoke.
There is a tremendous difference between knowing information about something and possessing authority over it! Jesus wasn’t offering another opinion to add to the pile of prevailing opinions. Nor was He standing there saying: “Well, Rabbi So and So says this, but another teacher says that…” Jesus spoke differently… and the people noticed.
Something Interrupts the Sermon
Mark writes: “Now there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, saying, ‘Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!’”
— Mark 1:23–24
Talk about disrupting a Church service! Picture the room, people are already astonished by Jesus’ teaching. They’re listening to Jesus teach scripture with an authority unlike anything they have ever experienced… when suddenly this voice erupts from the crowd!
But notice what the unclean spirit says: “I know who You are—the Holy One of God!”
Now that’s interesting… The people are still trying to figure Jesus out; the disciples are only beginning to understand Who they are following… But the unclean spirit recognizes Him.
I’m sure there’s a lesson hidden in there… Simply knowing facts about Jesus isn’t the same thing as following Jesus!
You’ll notice this demon knew Who Jesus was, it correctly identified Jesus for who he was. But recognition wasn’t worship. That should challenge us…
Christianity is more than knowing Bible facts… It’s more than being able to identify Jesus… Following Jesus means exactly what Simon and Andrew had just demonstrated:
We follow Him!
“Be Quiet.”
Now watch Jesus! No panic, no fear, no elaborate performance and no drawn-out conversation. Simply: “Be quiet and come out of him!”
— Mark 1:25
That’s it. Be quiet. Come out… And the spirit obeys!
Mark tells us: “And when the unclean spirit had convulsed him and cried out with a loud voice, he came out of him.”
— Mark 1:26
The people are stunned, and obviously so, but look closely at what they say:
“What is this? What new doctrine is this? For with authority, He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him.”
— Mark 1:27
There it is again… AUTHORITY! First, they heard authority in His words. Now they have witnessed authority in His actions. Jesus doesn’t merely talk with authority, Jesus acts with authority! His teaching and His life MATCH…
People in that synagogue had listened to countless religious discussions, but what they had just witnessed was different. When Jesus commanded… something happened.
Word Starts Spreading
People started talking! Mark says: “And immediately His fame spread throughout all the region around Galilee.”
— Mark 1:28
Imagine walking home after that synagogue service, your neighbor asks: “How was synagogue?” Where would you even start?
“Well… there was this new teacher…”
And just like that the news traveled, people told their families, they told their neighbors, they even told people in surrounding cities. Something extraordinary was happening in Capernaum, but Jesus’ day wasn’t over…
Not even close.
From the Synagogue to the Living Room
After leaving the synagogue, Jesus goes with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew.
Now look at what happens next, because we go from something very public and dramatic… to something incredibly personal. Mark writes: “But Simon’s wife’s mother lay sick with a fever, and they told Him about her at once.”
— Mark 1:30
A few moments ago, Jesus was standing in a synagogue, astonishing a crowd, now He’s standing in someone’s home, beside a sick woman. No crowd, no stage, just someone who needs Him.
That tells us something beautiful about Jesus! He isn’t only interested in the crowd; He sees the individual.
Sometimes we imagine that God must be concerned with much more important things than whatever we’re facing… There are wars, disasters and famine… Why would God care about what’s happening in my little house?
Then we read stories like this! Jesus leaves the synagogue… walks into Simon’s house… and cares about one sick woman!
Jesus Takes Her by the Hand
“So He came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and immediately the fever left her.”
— Mark 1:31
Again, notice the simplicity, Jesus walks over, takes her hand, and lifts her up… The fever is gone. The same Jesus Who demonstrated authority over an unclean spirit in the synagogue demonstrates authority over sickness in a house. Mark gives us another little detail: “And she served them.”
She gets up and serves! Not because she has to earn what Jesus just did, the healing already happened. She serves after receiving! That’s a beautiful picture of the Christian life right there. We don’t serve Jesus so He will love us…We don’t serve Jesus hoping we can somehow earn enough points to receive His grace. We receive His grace… and then we serve out of gratitude.
We love because He first loved us… We serve because He first served us.
Then the Entire Town Shows Up
It’s about this time when you and I would want to finally sit down, relax and talk with the disciples about everything that happened…
Nope not Jesus, Mark tells us: “At evening, when the sun had set, they brought to Him all who were sick and those who were demon-possessed.”
— Mark 1:32
The sun had set, the sabbath had ended. People could now move about more freely, without the sabbath restrictions, and apparently everyone had heard what happened.
Remember verse 28? His fame spread! Well, here they come. Mark says: “And the whole city was gathered together at the door.”
— Mark 1:33
Can you imagine looking out the window? Outside the house, on the lawn, people everywhere! Sick and desperate people looking for hope. Families brought their loved ones who have heard…
There’s a Man in Capernaum Who can help, and Jesus doesn’t turn them away.
Mark says: “Then He healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons.”
— Mark 1:34
Look now at Everything Jesus Has Done
Jesus enters the synagogue, He teaches with authority, an unclean spirit confronts Him, Jesus demonstrates authority over evil… Jesus then enters Simon’s home and finds a woman sick with fever, and demonstrates authority over sickness. Then the whole town gathers outside, and Jesus keeps ministering, one person after another, one need after another, healing diseases and casting out demons…
Mark is beginning to show us exactly Who this Jesus is.. Remember where his Gospel began?
“The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.”
— Mark 1:1
Mark told us the answer before he started telling us the story… Now he’s showing us the evidence. Watch Jesus, what He says, what He does. See how creation responds to Him, how evil responds to Him. Notice how sickness responds to Him, how people respond to Him.
Because Mark isn’t simply asking us to admire Jesus. Mark is showing us why Jesus is worth following.
